This is a much more complex issue than simply saying we cannot support
breastfeeding without qualification. The data on HIV and breastfeeding is
VERY different from that relating to AIDS (active disease) and
breastfeeding.

Furthermore, the data when women are on AZT during pregnancy is
considerably more positive than things used to be. We do not yet know if
the dramatic decline in progression of the disease when on AZT during
pregnancy will continue (it probably would) through breastfeeding, because
no studies have yet been reported on this.

I urge everyone concerned about HIV and breastfeeding to go to the primary
literature yourself. Do not depend on someone else's opinion or
understanding of same. It may not be complete. Any conference
presetnation is by its very nature incomplete and usually just a skirting
along the top of a DEEP pond to provide summary information. To make
clinical decisions on the basis of this is unwise, in my opinion. (as a
speaker AND a reader of the literature)
