Pat from MN asks if a uterine infection could be the cause of her client's
low supply. I would guess that an infection that she is well enough to be
home for (ie not so sick she is hospitalised and on IVs) would not effect
milk supply.
However, a cause for the endometritis in the first place could be retained
functional placental fragment, which has been reported extensively to
inhibit milk supply to varying degrees.
I, personally, have had no luck in getting docs to do a D&C even when they
have confirmed the diagnosis with ultrasound - they just put the woman on
antibiotics, tell me it will re-absorb and do I really want to risk a GA
for this woman when their treatment is so simple <sigh>. Needless to say,
by the time it has reabsorbed lactation has long ago been given away.
