Some small amount will get into the breastmilk and alter the baby's bowel
flora.  It may cause diarrhea, but the risk is minimal and the risk of NOT
using Mom's breastmilk is much higher!  Another concern, in a VLBW infant
would be the possible higher load of bacteria in the milk.  I understand the
neonatologist's concerns, but I would continue to use the milk.  Other
alternatives would be to use pastuerized donor
human milk, or mom's own milk pumped and stored BEFORE the episode of
mastitis.
