What about stating simply, seriously and with genuine interest "I have been
doing some research about that drug/procedure/ recommendation you made
recently and I haven’t been able to find anything-would you mind telling me
please where you read about this? I am very interested in following this
up." 
This removes the burden of proof from you, may get them doing some research
of their own and most importantly could not be construed as any sort of
professional affront, if they have that sort of tendency.
