I have had several young women (especially those teens) who (if necessary)
can pump a large amount of colostrum just about every time.

We had a teen just about two to three weeks ago and this was the case with
her. The baby would not (and did not) latch at all for 2 days and she was one
of those ones we got pumping pretty much right from the get-go. The very
first time she pumped she got well over 20 cc's. Thereafter, she got large
amounts like that consistantly.

The baby was a really slow learner and I was so thankful she was such a
pumping queen. Actually, I followed her in the community and the baby finally
did latch and was doing a good job with nursing.

These are the scenarios that make me a believer in the judicious use of
breastpumps in the face of breastfeeding difficulties.

Had she not been encouraged to pump and supported through this, I am
pretty sure she would have given up the idea of nursing altogether.
