I've seen this in an Japanese baby of a friend of mine - she wan't using dairy
products and was still breastfeeding. She and I thought it of no significance
other than an annoyance - the mom keep wettin it and trying to get it to lie
flat.
But I also read an article in an American journal several years ago from a
group of Japanese researchers. It was in a Supplement to an otolaryngology
journal which described tongue-tie as part of a larger condition and for which
they had developed a surgical repair.
They described involvement of the oropharynx as well as the tongue-tie and
surgically altered the ankyloglossia and throat. As well as hair standing up
on end they had published colored photos of some babies showing [what they had
decided was] a characteristic frown on the forehead. I had copies of this
article but gave then to a Japanese woman who'd had this surgery on her first-
born in Japan and was looking to see if she could find a surgeon to do it for
her here in the USA for her soon-to-be born child. Her husband had had the
surgery done as an adult and had been severely tongue-tied. It had affected
his speech.
