Laurie, go here http://www.biologicalnurturing.com/ for more info.
Here in the UK many of us are using this approach with hard-to-latch
babies (or even any baby) and having great success. We *don't* do
the 'tummy to tummy, nipple to nose' thing, and find that the baby
gets on just fine without it - they really do find their own way
there.

It works well when the mother and baby are co-bathing as well, and I
have a video clip I use which shows a never-latched baby manage
beautifully - the biological nurturing position is one that is
adopted very naturally in the bath.

It's especially useful with babies and mothers who are suffering the
results of 'helpful' hands-on latching - too often, we find that
midwives get the breast in one hand and the baby's head in the other
and try to plug them together. Some mothers and babies find this
invasive, and babies 'switch off' as a result.
