Hi Kim,
Congratulations on your new opportunity. Your description of the service
you are planning to offer, and your questions, show that you have a lovely,
client-centred approach.
Rather than load you with a lot of ideas, which I'm sure other lactnetters
will provide, let's cut to the chase with just a few basic tips:
1) Buy only the basics. Specifically on posters, a few good ones will save
a larger financial outlay at the start and you won't have overkill with too
many. Perhaps one in your waiting / consultation area and another in the
quiet room you have set aside. As money comes in, you can add more.
Let your new practice pay for itself as regards outlaying for more posters.
2) Avoiding mixed messages. Make sure there is no advertising for items
within the terms of the WHO Code adjacent to the entrance. The same with
any reading matter in the waiting area. Parenting magazines are likely to
contain adverts for products whose use undermines breastfeeding. Ask
friends and colleagues for back copies of suitable reading materials, such
as from LLL
3) Clarify payment with the OB practice so that there is no uncertainty.
Who handles the billing? Will you be paid per consultation or an hourly
rate?
4) A regards your query about which organisation to join: ILCA membership
gives you access to "Inside Track" handouts on a number of topics that you
can give to a client
My very best wishes in your new practice.
Virginia
