Jessica,

You wrote, "The mom thinks that she can't do the SNS anylonger, too
hard to manage with the two babies etc."

Some moms are overwhelmed nursing both babies at once. I know a
triplet mom who NEVER fed two babies at once. Of course, she was always
nursing! Anyhow, this mom might have better nursing success if she nursed
one baby at a time. Also with one baby the SNS might not be so overwhelming
(sometimes). A neat trick is to attach the supplementary tube under the
breast instead of on top (thank you to Pat Lindsey for that tidbit of info!).
Moms often don't feel like it is in the way, and baby doesn't end up with a
tube that may poke him in the roof of the mouth. Even though this mom might
want to be gadget free, the bottle is still a gadget, but what type of bottle
is she using? I really prefer Avent, and so many moms, especially ones with
premie twins end up with tons of those nipples that are given out at the
hospital. Other issues that may seem trivial, but turn out to be very
important are-- Is she getting enough water? sleep? food? help?

Also, do you know a successful nursing twin mom that she could get
support from? Even a mom that is not nursing now, but remembers what it was
like could be a helpful sounding board for this mom. If you don't
personally know someone, a local LLL Leader may She needs to know this can
be done.

Good luck! Debbie Albert, Ph.D, IBCLC
