I have a mom who called me asking about breast pumps. Her baby is 3 mos
old. After some asking I find that she wants to pump for occasionally (like
once a week) separation from baby *and* she is concerned about the baby's
nursing length and thinks that if she pumps that it will encourage her baby
to nurse longer at the breast. She states that infant nurses on demand about
every 1-2-3 hrs about 10-12 times a day. Gaining tons and peeing and
pooping frequently.
Her concern is that baby now only wants to nurse for about 5 min. per
feeding. Sounds fine to me. Am I missing anything here? Is this too short?

She also states that infant was extremely gassy at 6 wks of age and has been
getting simethecone drops since then and that the infant's bm is an
orange-yellow color. I asked if the baby was getting anything else by mouth
and she said no. I told her, I wondered if the orange tint could be from the
drops, but mom was adamant that the bm was always that color. I just want
to be sure about this baby. I haven't heard a mom tell me the bms were this
color before. Does anyone know what orange-yellow bm could signify? Could
it be the simethecone drops or could it be something else like vitamins. I
didn't think to ask specifically about vitamins.
