Babies with receding chins are often quite difficult to latch well. It is
the bottom jaw and the ability of the tongue to reach and cup around the
breast which most insure good stripping of the breast. The baby doesn't
need jaw support so much as to have the bottom jaw moved closer to the
breast. The angle of approach should involve "leading with the chin." In
otherwords, tip the baby's head back and make sure there is a lot of space
between the tip of the babys nose and the breast. This will jam the chin in
close, shorten the distance the tongue has to reach, and place baby's lower
jaw compression over the milk sinuses rather than out on the nipple tip.
The mother should support the breast and help hold it in the baby's mouth,
and she should use deep breast compression.
