Hi I have been enjoying the lactnet for about three months now. I am a
staff nurse at our local hospital and also one of the LCs in a newly formed
dept called Lactation Services. I have worked in the OB field for 20 years
with a special interest in lactation. I I nursed all three of my children
through toddlerhood and then some! I (we)
nursed through pregnancies, in labor, and tandem nursed. They would
sometimes" fight" over the big side! I'm almost finished the BSC course (I
would probably be done by now if not for my discovery of the lactnet! ), and
passed the IBCLC this year.
Now, my question. When we see a mother/baby couple with a yeast problem we
tell them they have to see the pedi and also get a presctiption for
themselves for nystatin cream. Is anyone out there using OTC preparations
for this.(the ones sold for atheletes foot and Jock Itch) My husband had a
yeast infection treated beautifully with Lotrimin soln which is Clorimazole
1% in PEG (propylene glycol) I know the drug is safe and effective, is PEG??

I , too am very frustrated by the pushing by the medical community of
epidurals. I'm told women want them, its safe so, why suffer? They just
don't not get it and it is sad.
One of our new OB's wants to be unconscience when she has kids!!! She thinks
they had it right using scopolomine! Many of our patients take PCE and have
great resolve to "get through" birth without drugs. I support this (Lots of
comfort measures) only to have the MD come in and say "How bout an epidural?"
They actually do this-no hello no how are you, just I'm here to make this
easier for you. Many of our nurses don't even like to work out in L&D anymore
because of this. We feel we are technicians taking care of all the machines.
It is so frustrating. Lactnet helps me know that there are people out there
with similiar philosophies and I am not alone!!

TIA , Jane Crotteau RNC, IBCLC In sunny, cold N.H.
