Dear Friends:
Mary Renard's excellent post about people of the modern day being out of
touch with their natural rhythms, ignorant of their body processes (sick or
well), and wanting immediate fixes RIGHT NOW reminds me of what my
grandparents believed. My grandmothers had their babies in the 20's. The
doctor was considered to be the oracle of truth about all things physical and
medical. I still remember my grandparents talking about "The Doctor" in
capital letters, no matter what was said, there was no questioning. That
attitude was passed on to my parents, and to me.
Of course, this is only one factor. Add that magical belief to a
technical world run on schedules, denying of needs and we have folks that
don't know what to do for a cold or for a pregnancy.
Could it be that what we are seeing today is the legacy of what happened
long ago, when the AMA systematically obliviated ( a Harry Potter curse) all
popular medical practices such as midwifery, homeopathy, naturopathy et al.
And birth and death moved away from home and everyday life into the
hospitals?
    Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI
