Congratulations to all of you in the UK for your court victory in the case of
Wyeth's illegal advertising of infant formula! We can only hope that at some
point in the USA, that we will have legislation that supports and implements
the WHO Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes. Achievement of this goal
maybe difficult for many reasons. Certainly, the current political climate
in Washington is not favorable towards the UN. So one might expect that this
fallout impacts any governmental body associated with it, such as the World
Health Organization.

It also would be logical to assume since the US Department of Health is
listed on a number of patents on human milk components (mostly lactoferrin) as the
assignee, that the US Department of Health's best interest is to protect their
investments. One particular governmental document from the 90's shows that
there is governmental support/funding for developing an infant formula that
they believe could be better than human milk. Thus, here in the USA, we have an
enormous barrier to cross because our own government while mouthing support of
breastfeeding is quietly investing in the competition. (Note in this UK case
which side of the argument in court a patent holder sits) Valerie W.
