Skimming through lactnet I unexpectedly came across Barbara's kind words
about the article Sam Oddie and I did last year -- thanks for that, Barbara!

One thing you said: 'She describes the lack of any research
(only anecdotal reports) to substantiate that weighing is stressful to
parents.' -- I have to say, it is true to say that Sam and I say this --
please give Sam his due for helping me to really reflect on this lack of
evidence!!!!

My own phd work is around weighing babies -- and I think it will demonstrate
a variety of things, though nothing about test weighing. I am doing an
ethnographic study of how women's experience of breastfeeding is influenced
by the routine weighing available from health visitors. In the UK many
women go to clinic weekly or fortnightly and usual practice is that the baby
is weighed at every visit. Health Visitor care starts at about 10-14 days
after the birth, before then midwives continue to visit women at home, and
they weigh the baby in some places, and don't in others (and, if they do
weigh, most often are still using those springy 'stork' scales!!!!!).

Test weighing is almost unheard of here in the UK, I don't even know of LCs
who use it.
