This is anecdotal observation, but I think breastfed babies, especially
exclusively breastfed babies, may be more likely to suck their thumbs than
partially breastfed or bottlefed babies, simply because the thumb is most
like mom's nipple - made of the same material and of a similar shape, and
it is always available to the baby. There are books written on how
to "make" a baby learn to self-comfort. So when they do by thumbsucking,
we complain. I agree - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I read (can't
remember where) a couple of years ago, that "most" adults still indulge in
some childhood self-comfort methods, such as thumb or finger sucking,
favorite blankies, stuffed animals. Psychologists studying this feel that
these adults tend to be very well-adjusted and that if these childish
methods of self-comfort help adults manage their stress, then what's so
wrong with it? Definitely cheaper than therapy or pills!
