Our Health Care Plan (that provides Medi-Cal coverage for the indigent
population in our county) gives mothers pumps when they return back to work
or school and report they are exclusively breastfeeding.

In order to receive a pump they must receive a 1 hour session by a Health
Assistant, Nurse, or social worker I have trained on the reason to continue
breastfeeding exclusively (why bother...or the "benefits" or the "risks of
not..." depending on the angle they feel is most effective with that
mother), how to use the pump, milk storage guidelines and how to talk to her
child care worker and their employer (rights, etc.). The Health Plan pays
for the time spent by the staff person providing the education.

My trainings are given once a year (in August) to all the prenatal programs
in the area. Only those who have trained staff can receive the pumps to
give to moms.

It has been going on for about 4 years now and we're now trying to gather
data on the length of time they actually use them.
