Hi, Mary!

I work in a hospital and we bill for outpatient services. At our hospital,
my understanding is that this is set up in advance. In other words, when a
bill is put through, the codes reflect an outpatient visit by a non-MD
person--such as a nurse appointment or an IBCLC.

We have had no problems from insurance companies. The only issue is if a
person needs a referral through an HMO or other group and comes in without
the referral. Most doctors are very cooperative in providing referrals.

IBCLCs are health care practitioners. We are considered in the same
category as Speech Therapists, Social Workers, Respiratory Therapists, etc.

Good luck!

Connie Chiavario, IBCLC, RLC
