Hi Everyone,
I have read the posts re teaching the older baby to suckle - I would
like the share the following story with you all. I have the mother's
permission to share. My friend Brenda adopted a 3 month orphan girl
called Penny. Penny's mom was single, was a thatholomide (?spelling) baby
and had her hands at her elbows - Penny was born with a hole in her heart,
with pulmonary hypertension and had 4 fingers on one hand and 5 on the
other. She was a "Holt-Oram" syndrome. She had only ever received
nagogastric feeds and had a tube in when Brenda brought her home. The
Paed told Brenda that if Penny was not taking a bottle in a week's time she
would have to go back to hospital. Brenda tried desperately to get her to
take a bottle - the baby refused! Brenda had breastfed 5 babies and in
desperation she put Penny to the breast - it was like a duck to water with
Penny - she nursed for an hour - no milk but she nursed. Brenda got a
prescription for salpirimide and started pumping - she also used an SNS.
She nursed Penny until 22 months when Penny died. I salute my friend
Brenda! Sincerely, Barbie Currie. IBCLC. White River, Mpumalanga. South
Africa.
