We recommend continuing to breastfeed during treatment for  mastitis because
usually the inflammatory process is taking place in the  tissue surrounding
the ducts so there is no risk of transferring infection to  bab. Tthe difference
between mastitis and plugged duct with "inflammation" is  the presence of a
temperature in mom: above 100.4 degrees F orally; treatment  for mastitis
should involve antibiotics being sure that the appopriate med  is used and for an
adequate length of time. "Heat, rest and empty the breast" is  good to remember
in both cases. I've seen many abcesses begin as a result of  being told "not
to nurse on the involved breast." That can get ugly fast as some  of the
recent posts have described.
Keeping the milk moving helps reduce the inflammation in the affected  breast
- whether by pumping or feeding the baby.
