Our bible for all things biochemical in milk is the : Handbook of MILK
Composition (sorry donšt have full reference with me - will forward later if
people need it) - there is a chapter by Stephanie Atkinson et al: Minerals
Ions and Trace Elements in Milk which reviews 10 studies from 1981 to 19991
to produce a table of normal values from 3 to 360 days (in mmol/L).
Concensus values are:
3 days: 17.9 +/- 4.5 mmol/l (411 +/- 4mg/l)
7-9 days: 14.1 +/- 4.9 mmol/l (324 +/- 113mg/l)
14 days: 11.1 +/- 3.3 mmol/l (255 +/- 76mg/l)
30 days: 9 +/- 4.1 mmol/l ( 207 +/-94mg/l)
90 days: 6.0 =/- 2.4 mmol/l (138 +/- 58 mg/l)
180 days; 5.4 +/- 2.4 mmol/l (124 =/- 55mg/l)
360 days: 4.6 +/- 1.4 mmol/l (106 +/- 32 mg/l)
Colostrum and mastitic milk may rise to as high as 30 -100 mmol/l
Alternately a recent paper is
Wack RP et al. 1997. Electrolyte Composition of Human breast Milk beyond the
early Post Partum period. Nutrition 13(9) 774-777. Who gives values in mg/L
which are not standard international units.
