Thanks to Judy and Maria for replying! The moms I'm referring to have been
exclusively bottle feeding - a combo of breastmilk in a bottle and formula
in a bottle. I believe they are feeding the breastmilk and the formula with
the same bottles/nipples, same speed, etc, but are telling me that baby
refuses to drink the bottled breastmilk and yet happily takes the bottled
formula.

Have you ever encountered this situation, and/or do you have any thoughts
on what may be going on?

Again, I don't think it's lipase, since we're talking about freshly
expressed milk.

The only thing I can come up with is that it may be mom's way of expressing
that she would rather give formula.

Artificial infants milks flow may be flowing more slowly than mother's
milk, could the baby feel unsafe with a faster flow rate than is experienced
with the formula? Is mom used paced, upright bottlefeeding strategy with a
"slow" ( meaning not overly fast) flow artificial nipple? I don't mean one
that says Slow I mean one that we've seen actually is slow/responsive. Or
is
normal feeding such a challenge, or fast bottlefeeding such a habit that
baby prefers having food poured down his throat with one of those
pre-filled
promotional giveaways with formula and those "speed feed" or "squash N
flood" artificial nipples?

Just a few things to consider...

Peace,
Judy

I've been a lurker for a while and this is my first post, so I'm hopeful
this topic has not been overdone or have a really obvious answer. I've
recently encountered two or three moms who told me that their newborn
refuses to drink breastmilk from a bottle, but will happily drink formula
from a bottle. One of these moms has newborn twins, and the baby girl will
supposedly drink breastmilk in a bottle, but the baby boy will only drink
formula. After racking my brain, I cannot figure out what is going on. Are
these moms making things up or misinterpreting their babies, or perhaps
coming up with an excuse to formula feed? I realize mom's diet could
possibly affect her milk, particularly in terms of dairy, soy etc. However,
even in that case, could the newborn really discern this connection and opt
for formula? Also, breastmilk tastes so much better than formula - why
would any newborn prefer formula? And I should mention that none of these
moms were freezing their milk - I believe they were all placing freshly
expressed milk in a bottle - so a lipase issue seems moot. Thanks for
shedding some light for me, as I'm sure others have encountered this
situation as well.
