Even though we all seem to agree that birthing has a great effect on
breastfeeding, it is time to bring the discussion back to breastfeeding and
leave birthing issues to off-line discussions. Birthing issues are a
welcome topic only as they specifically relate to their effect on
breastfeeding.

There have also been many personal examples of pain and how one has dealt
with that pain. Please remember that personal experiences and perceptions
are *reality for that individual*. It is important to keep that in mind
when working with any individual in pain, both severe and minor pain as well
as physical or emotional pain, and work hard not to judge that individual
based on projections of our personal experiences.

An example...my teenaged daughter had abdominal pain in the spring. She
could walk, talk, etc. but identified the pain as a "10" in the ER. I
thought, how could that possibly be a 10, she can't know what 10 pain feels
likes. Well, for her, it probably was a 10...the worst pain she'd ever felt
in her 15 years. As she experiences more pain in her life, she will
likely re-evaluate her personal pain scale, she may always mark that episode
as the point by which to measure all other pain, or she may have other
experiences that will step up to be her new 10. My point, though, is that
my reaction that "it can't possibly be a 10" was based on my experiences,
not hers.

So again, please move the discussion away from birthing issues and back to
breastfeeding.

Kathy, for the list mothers
