IME, after a general anesth. and emergency c-section, It was
approximately 6 weeks before I really grasped the fact that this was my
baby. Up until that time, anyone could have come and told me I had the
wrong baby and I would have believed them. I think this has some to do
with the drugs and some to do with the bathing. Perhaps if the first
time I saw my baby she was unwashed, I could have imprinted her odor,
who knows. With my second, I did not have this problem. Knew from the
instatnt she took that first breath that she was mine. By 2 hours pp I
could identify her cry from the other babies on my ward.
But, I was aware for her delivery, and held her for close to two hours
before they washed her.
