I read w/ interest the article, "Nutrition & oral health guidelines for
pregnant women, infants, & children", in the Feb. '98 issue of the J of the
Amer Dietetic Assn. (As of now the Feb issue's not up at ADA's website,
eatright.org.) A table titled, "Oral health & dietary mgmt for mothers &
children" caught my attention and one of the diet & nutrition guidelines for
infants from birth to 6 mos. reads: "Avoid frequent, on-demand breast-feeding
at night (develop feeding schedule so infant takes several ounces every few
hours rather than feeding continuously)." The table also reads: "Introduce
cup at 6 mo.; wean by 12 mo." It's not completely clear whether the authors
intend weaning from bottle or breast. Here's my problem...The references on
the table don't seem to match the reference list at the end of the article, so
I'm having difficulty reviewing the authors' sources before composing a letter
to the editor, primarily questioning why infants should be scheduled and how a
breastfeeding mom knows how many ounces her little one consumes at each
feeding. The referenced authors are (1) Casamassimo and (2) Griffen and
Geopferd. Casamassimo is listed as a source elsewhere in the article with a
publication, "Bright Futures in Practice: Oral Health." Publ by Nat'l Ctr
for Ed in Maternal and Child Health, '96.

Sorry for the lengthy post about some minute details, but if anyone can help
me w/ sourcing Casamassimo, etc. *and/or* have some great references regarding
dental health guidelines that don't preclude breastfeeding infants on demand,
please help. They only publish 5 references in letters to the editor, and
wading through the LACTNET archives may not find me turning up the very best
references in your wise opinions. (If you have access to JADA at work, the
troublesome article begins on page 182 and the table I'm questioning is on
page 184.) Many TIA.

Rebecca
