Formula would more than likely only compound the problem (except maybe a 
pre-digested formula like Alimentum). I applaud the mother for sticking to her 
guns. Maybe the baby has a tiny fissure causing the bleeding. Are the baby's 
stools normal otherwise and does this bleeding happen every time?Were there 
any other irritants present (like antibiotics,etc) in either the baby or the 
mother?

I would help the mother NOT panic because if the baby is happy and 
otherwise appears normal, then the issue probably isn't too big of a deal.

Sadly, many physicians are quick to blame breastfeeding as a cause of 
problems just as some patients blame all their problelms on their pregnancy. 
We see that problem a lot in the general pregnant population.
