From a developmental approach. Babies do not have the oral skills to eat at
2-3 months. they are still in a suckling phase. They cannot move the food
effectively in their mouth to swallow and hence it comes out again. Feeding
skills are not a learned skill it is one that is developmental. This means if
babies start eating solid foods at an early age they will not learn it any
sooner than is developmentally appropriate some where between 4 to 6 months.
A good book is Pre feeding Skills by Suzanne Evans Morris (Speech therapist)
She actually videotaped babies in there first year of life and accessed there
feeding development. All the normally developing babies developed the skills
at about the same chronological time. In other words feeding a baby at 2
months is like trying to teach them how to crawl. No matter how much practice
they will not crawl at 3 months.
Hope this helps.
