I had a similar experience with my own preemie born at 32 weeks. At
discharge (36 weeks) she weighed 4 lb 7 oz (1900 something g :)). One week
later she had only gained about 3.5 oz. We went off bottles of EBM "cold
turkey" and exclusively breastfed, as did this mom. Because she had to learn
to breastfeed that first week, I believe that she may have even lost weight
the first few days, because the hospital had her on a 3 hour schedule and she
probably could get less milk from my breast than she did from the bottle.
She quickly learned to nurse frequently, had a good latch and good stool and
urine output. By her second week home she was gaining an ounce/day and now
is gaining even more (1 lb every 10 days or so). So hopefully this mom and
babe will learn quickly and soon catch up, as has been my own personal
experience. She definitely needs plenty of encouragement and congratulations
for doing what she is doing. Having a baby that small is very stressful and
every ounce counts.

Warmly,
Alison Needham
