Hi, My name is Christine Choong & I am working as a Lactation Consultant &
Childbirth Educator in Kuala Lumpur. I am reintroducing myself as I have
been nomail for quite some time & generally when I am on mail I just read &
learn!
I would be very grateful for your input on a lady I saw recently who is
expecting her 2nd baby in early january. She is Muslim & very keen to breast
feed this baby.
She stopped feeding her first baby after 3-4 weeks due to severe pain in her
breasts which lasted for approximately 1 hour after every feed. The pain
started on the 3rd day after delivery & she describes it as a throbbing pain
from the nipple through to her back. As she found it excessively painful to
breastfeed she decided to try expressing using the Avent Isis pump but
experienced the same pain.
The baby was delivered by vaccuum & did have phototherapy for raised
bilirubin levels. otherwise everything was OK. She was assured by the
nursing staff that her baby was well attached. She did not have any
antibiotic therapy. She was checked out by doctors who are breast
specialists who could not find any explanation. I wondered about
vaspconstriction or Raynaud's but she says there was never any white or blue
colour on the nipple - just slight reddish colour after feeding or
expression.
I have checked out the archives but apart from vasoconstriction, raynauds or
thrush the only other explanation I could find was raised prolactin levels.
Would be grateful for any advice or suggestions to help this lady breastfeed
the new baby. I read that Nifedipine or ibuprufen might help. Any advice on
this.
Thank you so much in advance.
Christine Choong
