Hello friends,

The mother of an 18-month-old boy asked me for suggestions to discontinue the pacifier. He is mom’s 5th child, nurses about 4 times a day and once during the night. He is the only of her children to use a pacifier. The other 4 nursed about 2 ½ years each, til during the subsequent pregnancy (how’s that for nature’s perfect family spacing ☺?) and never used a “binky.” And he sleeps with mom (yeaaaa!)

I have all the information about the disadvantages of and “why not” to use a pacifier, but none on how to stop using one. I have no personal experience getting rid of the binky/dummy/paci as my boys never had one. My only suggestion would be just let him nurse instead J

Mom is pretty sure this will be her last child and loves nursing. Her pediatrician just told her it’s time to “cut back on the breastfeeding” (I know, grrrr) and mom says she has always nursed whenever her babies wanted and doesn’t feel comfortable cutting back if he wants to nurse, especially since he’s a picky eater.

Thanks for any articles etc you can suggest to me for discontinuing use of the pacifier, whether it’s gradual or sudden.
