Although it is possible to transmit herpes to the nipple, one would
first have to have herpes on the mouth.  Your description sounds more
like cheilosis than herpes, especially given the apparent lack of
exposure for transmission of herpes to the child. 
 
I wouldn't CALL the pediatrician and ask for anything, I would instead
take the child in to be SEEN by the ped or other health care provider
who can conduct the appropriate lab test to determine the causative
agent for the sore.  This would be particularly important if the mother
may have or breastfeed more children in the future.
