she increased
the iron in her own diet. When she returned to the doctor a month
later, the
still exclusively breastfed baby now had normal iron levels. I know
this is
a case of one, but I found that interesting!

i can add a case # two to this. my 1st son was born at 35 wks. had
normal iron until the 9 month checkup. he still had not cut any teeth
nor shown the slightest interest in solids and so was exclusively
bf'ed. the ped said we needed to do the iron drops. those things were
horrible! smelled like coke syrup, stained all his clothes and mine.
he hated it. he would shudder and gag and spit it out all over us. i
tried forcing it for about a week and then gave up in disgust. instead
i greatly increased my own intake of iron rich foods and when we
rechecked a month later, his iron levels were beautiful. none of my
others have ever had low iron again and when they start solids (all of
them around 8 mos - 1st one at 11 mos) i begin giving them cod liver
oil in addition to plenty of leafy greens and lots of healthy seeds -
esp in the winter where we can go weeks w/out seeing the sun here in
michigan.
