Lora. I worked in a very busy 27 bed Level 3 NICU of a Teaching Hosiptal
and what I saw, unfortunatley, was a bottle being given or gavage feeds with
a pacy for sucking if mom not available, which was often in our community.
Realistically, short staffing does not provide the time for most facilities
to practice the more time consuming cup and syringe feeds. When you have 4
infants , two on vents and drips and the others feeders and growers and/or
r/o sepsis cases, there is not time often for you to even eat or go to the
bathroom in a usual 12 hour shift, Lisa Mooney, RN, BSN ,LC (Hoping
healthcare will turn around and invest more dollars in preventive medicine
then end of life expensive care , so that the world can become a healthier
place to live)
