I would agree that optimizing milk supply is crucial here. You won't be
able to wean from the SNS unless mom has enough milk there for him. Get
the herbs and Domperidone going.

Other thoughts: sometimes it helps to have mom pump up until letdown
occurs, and then latch baby, so milk is "right there". There are
different sizes of tubing on the SNS...if she isn't already using the
smallest, she can slow the flow some that way, to help wean from it.
Once her supply is up, if he is still looking for the tube before he
starts suckling, you could leave the tube there but either "turn off"
the flow completely, or not have any milk in the reservoir, until he
learns to "trust" the breast by itself.

I would also like to STRONGLY suggest that she write a letter to the
hospital complaining about her mismanagement. And YOU could send the
primary doctor who told her she couldn't nurse for a WEEK while in the
hospital under bili lights a copy of the review article on Jaundice in
Clinics in Perinatology- June 1999 - "Clinical Aspects of Human Milk and
Lactation". This is hardly "new" information. Babies do not need to
stop nursing AT ALL...let alone for a week. (I haven't heard of anyone
doing that for a very long time.) And SHE should write him a note and
let him know how difficult he has made their nursing relationship and
harmed her milk supply.as she asks to have her baby's records
transferred to another provider. Doctors and Administrations are not
going to change their behavior until the consumer starts making a stink.
Also, if this kid ends up with allergies or asthma or Diabetes or
lymphoma (etc/etc) at some point in the future, I would recommend she
sue the physician. (And I wish Liz could be here to help) I am
becoming more and more convinced that this is what will have to happen
to get the attention and change the behavior of many physicians. (As
sad as I am to admit that)

Just my 2 cents-
