Susan, how long have you been out of hospital practice? I have been working
in OB for over 20 yrs. It is not as easy to find time to help couples with BF
today as it was 5 & 10 yrs ago. They keep cutting staff, increasing paper
work & increasing what the nurse has to do in a shift. We don't always have a
tech to help us with beds, baths, vital signs, food trays, helping pts to the
bathroom, filling water pitchers, answering call lights, etc. Some days, such
as today, we stay busy discharging and admitting patients in addition to all
the other tasks. It can be really frustrating! I just finished working 14 hrs
(that's supposed to be a 12 hrs shift.) It is not unusual to work beyond the
12 hrs.
