POSITION TITLE LACTATION CONSULTANT

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Applies standards of performance as described below:

a)  Utilizes strategies to promote breast feeding beyond the first weeks

of life and minimize incidence of
     lactation failure.
b)  Facilitates a multidisciplinary approach to breastfeeding problems.
c)  Provides educational and procedural support services to nursing
staff.
d)  Applies and conducts research relative to breastfeeding in the
clinical setting.
e)  Provides for professional self development.

Maintains and adheres to policies, procedures and standards of the
Hospital.

PRACTICE
Utilizes strategies to support breast feeding by:
a)  Providing clinical services for families who are breast feeding
their babies by:
                1. assessing breastfeeding problems
                2. planning and implementing appropriate interventions
                3. evaluating effectiveness of interventions
b)  Co-coordinating with staff to identify breastfeeding problems and
develop care plans
c)  Developing a community resource referral system for families in
transition from hospital to home.


Facilitates a Multidisciplinary approach by:

a)  Participating in interdisciplinary model of documentation by
charting assessments, interventions and results.
b)  Conferring with nursing personnel on family progress, special needs
and continuity of care.
c)  Planning and implementing on-going in-service programs for staff who
interact with breastfeeding
mothers.
d)  Report in to staff caregivers re- family progress, special needs and
continuity of care.
e)  Facilitate the development of a reference/resource library of
breastfeeding educational materials.
f)  Providing consultation to other facilities on a shared service
basis.

Provides educational and procedural support services to nursing staff
by:


a)  In conjunction with managers and committees, develops standards of
care for the breast feeding      family.
b)  Disseminating current information and research data on breastfeeding

and incorporating same to staff education in-services.
c)  Providing input to updates of hospital polices impacting
breastfeeding.
d)  Providing lactation education based on principles of adult learning
to staff.
e)  Providing leadership on breast feeding committees both in hospital
and community.

Applies and conducts research relative to breastfeeding in the clinical
setting by:

a)  Being aware of current literature and research regarding lactation.
b)  Utilizing research findings in practice to encourage change.
c)  Designing and conducting focus studies based upon problems or needs
identified in the care of the
breastfeeding family.
d)  Participating in the evaluation of the effectiveness of the
Lactation Consultant's role
e)  Maintaining statistical data relevant to lactation issues.
f)   Maintaining statistical data relevant to the Lactation Consultants
role.

Provides for professional self development by:

a)  Keeping certification current.
b)  Maintaining membership in appropriate professional associations.

Performs other related duties as requested

EDUCATION AND SPECIFIC TRAINING
a)  Specialized training in Lactation
b)  Certified through the International Board Of Lactation Consultant
Examiners.
