I have resigned myself to the fact that the day we get rid of the
dreaded sample packs will be the same day there is a snowball fight in
Hell! In even bringing up the subject of Baby Friendly, the immediate
response is "We won't get rid of discharge packs and other formula gifts
(my emphasis)." I won't give up, but I'm certainly not holding my
breath! Meanwhile, we do work on and savor the little victories. For
example, I've noted a number of nurses who use the name badge holder
that blatently advertises a particular brand of formula (not the
company, the formula itself) have covered up the name with various
"stickers". I can't say it's all because they don't want to
advertise-at the same time a ban was issued on putting any such items on
the name tags themselves, so those that want to "decorate" are looking
for somewhere else to do it. At least it's not broadcasting the formula
name.
I am adamant about "correcting" anyone who refers to them as "gift"
bags. I always ask them to please refer to them as what they are-SAMPLE
packs. I even go so far as to cross out "gift" and write "sample" if
I'm checking a nurses work sheet on a mom for some other info. I don't
make a big deal, but when I hear "gift", I simply say something like
"Don't you mean 'sample'?". It's getting so that for some, all I have
to do is look at them or quietly clear my throat and they reluctantly
say "OK, sample". I don't care how many times people accuse me of being
"too rigid". This is one issue on which I won't change or back off!!!!
Winnie
