My take on this has been, if the baby will drain the breast well after a bit
of softening to enhance latch, then pump "to take the top off".
If you have a ripping case of engorgement (ouch, bad adjective!) then
pumping to drain will be the best course of action. My thought process says,
since this is "every fluid in your body coming to help make milk", helping
to clear that interstitial fluid will help the best. I hadn't gone so far as
Mardrey had gone in my physiologic thinking - I'll have to muse on that
one...
Another good example of how little we know about these first days of
motherhood!
