Pat: Little data seem to be available on most antihistamines. Seldane
(terfenadine) is one with no available data (per Briggs, which is a very
helpful resource for me). In fact, except for Benadryl (diphenhydramine),
which is known to get into breast milk in unknown quantities and is
contraindicated by the manufacturer due to sensitivity of newborns to
antihistamines, and Tavist (clemastine), which has made the AAP's list of
"use with caution" due to a single case report of irritability in a baby
(whose mother was also taking phenytoin and carbamazepine), there is
nothing else in Briggs or the AAP list about antihistamines.

I wonder whether this mother really needs antihistamines for her
allergies. How extensive are her symptoms? Many people with localized
symptoms such as nasal congestion and/or itchy eyes get tremendous relief
from topical meds such as nasal steroids or cromolyn and/or cromolyn eye
drops. Topical steroids, as per previous discussions on the net, should
be safe. Although there are no data about cromolyn either, it again
should be relatively safe as a topical agent. Hope this helps. Alicia.
