>> I hope I'm doing this right .Hello all.I have been mostly a lurker but
was asked to present this situation by a llleader.we have received
permission from mom and dad to present the info on lactnett.mom is nursing
thriving, active, happy apparently healthy 9-month old.weight and height
have been great.she went to well baby 9 month check and MD wanted to do a
hematocrit because baby is just receiving breast milk and occasionally
fresh mashed bananas and fresh applesauce mom makes.( I remember this being
routine at 9-12 months the finger stick for hct.) hct came back 29% .MD says
low normal is 32%.MD wants a retic count via venous stick.parents agreed but
mostly because mom wants to see the hemoglobin.mom is using the
breastfeeding answer book regarding normal hgb levels in BF babies at
certain ages. I have a newer copy at home and the copy she is using is at
work. but I believe, though I may be wrong, it said a hgb of 9 in this study
was the norm for exclusively BF babies at this age.. mom refuses to give
baby anything processed or synthetic.(iron supplements or iron fortified
cereal.) dad doesn't want the baby to have iron supplements because he read
an article stating males given iron suppl. had an increased risk of heart
disease.(there is family hx. of heart problems on dads side.) mom said she
would do nothing if hgb came back as 9 or higher.but is worried about hrs
involvement if she refuses to treat the anemia.she said she would also be
willing to puree liver or spleen and feed to baby.

>> so... after all that what do you think? is a hct of 29% and hgb of 9
ok in an exclusively BF baby? ( these values for her son may be lower with
a venous stick also.)would the pureed liver or spleen do the trick or is
that inviting other problems?
