In a little piece entitled "The Human Satisfier." Julie Allen Shivel analyzes
the term 'human pacifier.' "To pacify means to make peace or calm. And
breastfeeding certainly can do that. . . . Of course breastfeeding on demand
fills an empty tummy; it also nourishes a hunger for mother's touch, gentles
a weary infant toward sleep, develops baby's brain and body, helps organize
an immature nervous system, instills trust and quenches a thirst for love.
Breastfeeding is essentially a fulfilling experience for a baby, not merely a
pacifying one. . . ...that elevates us to 'human satisfiers'. I can think of
many ways to pacify; however, there are few times in our lives when we truly
satisfy another's needs."
I hope that NEW BEGINNINGS will reprint the entire piece. If you should
decide to use this excerpt, please credit Julie Allen Shivel, 'Turning
Leaves' (an LLL Leaders' newsletter), Spring 2000. I think Julie has given
us a useful little tool and deserves credit (goodness knows there is no
money!) for her insight.
