Over just the past few months of studying to become an
LC, this newcomer to lactation is now convinced that
the best way to supplement an infant with the goal of
weight gain AND increased milk supply is to supplement
at the breast, during feeds. My wonderful instructor
uses a 20-cc syringe and a #5 French feeding tube (the
15" long tube seems to be the easiest to handle),
rather than an SNS. Much less expensive and easier to
find in facilities whose lactation supplies may be
limited by funding, etc. As the baby suckles, baby is
receiving breastmilk and the supplement (either EBM or
formula), thus learning to suckle at breast and
stimulating the breast to produce at the same time.
It also seems that giving supplemental milk during a
breastfeeding session is less overwhelming to parents,
since there is no need to prepare and give a bottle
after the baby has been to breast. Also, this method
removes the possible hazard of baby developing a
nipple/flow preference and becoming enamored of the
bottle! For short term supplementation to boost
weight gain and mom's milk supply, this is the method
I plan to use in my practice.
Just my 20 cc's!
