I've seen this more often in women who have been sexually abused.   Sadly,
knowing how many women are sexually abused, it may be a relatively common
problem.  I'm sure this is a large undiscussed reason that so many women
"couldn't" breastfeed.
My Mum always said that she was just too stressed out to breastfeed.   That
she just felt so uptight and upset whenever it was time to feed the  baby.  A
few years ago she told us that she was sexually abused in her teen  years.  I
know countless other women who have found this to affect their  breastfeeding
relationship with their children.
Yet some women find that this is the healing process that helps their body
and mind move past the anxiety.  It just depends.  There are so many  processes
going on in breastfeeding, it could be any number of things, but a  sensitive
discussion about how "some women who have a history of abuse find
breastfeeding makes them very anxious" can be a good thing to bring up.
