I am looking for information on how other LCs have helped mothers continue
breastfeeding their baby with PKU. My client was first told to "wean
immediately" when she met with the specialist. Her baby was 2 weeks old at
that time. She expressed through the week, at my suggestion, until her next
visit at the specialist's office. This gave her the opportunity to think
about what she wanted and prepare to discuss options with the doctor. She
came away from the next visit, yesterday, breastfeeding at every other
feeding and providing the specialized formula at every other feeding. She is
expressing at the feedings that she is giving bottles. I do feel like the
doctor is trying to be supportive. The mother was initially distraught over
the diagnosis and unable to dialog about options. I have accessed the article
from LLL for her as well as info from several texts.
How does the physician decide on the quantity of special formula that the
baby must take? Would she be able to use an SNS to provide this formula?
After working with a mother who has had this situation what would you
recommend in hindsight?
Thanks for any wisdom you can share!
