I don't know about specific studies on this, just my own observations in many
moms and babies.
For most Dutch babies the first painfull event is drawing blood from the heel
for PKU, second comes witrh first vaccinations around 2 months. many moms are
advised to be breastfeeding at the moment the baby gets the needle in. I did
not do exact countings, but I estimate that about as many moms report great
effects as do report a baby getting off the breast shouting and protesting
and having difficulties getting baby bach to the breast. Perhaps the negative
effects occur a bit less than the positive, but sure a lot of babies feel
very distressed when peacfull breastfeeding is painfully disturbed. I do,
though, advise moms to stand ready to offer the breast right after the baby
starts to cry (have the bra opened and baby almost in the right position.
Ofcourse my only experience is with these two procedures and a incidental
tongue tie clipping.

Warmly greeting,

Gonneke
