Dear Lactnet Friends:

"Researchers were unsure how a yearling nursing constantly (she is, you can
hear her) would effect Lily's milk supply They also have concerns about
whether the new cub will be adequately nourished."

Let me get this straight. A black bear mamma's privacy in the safety of her
den has been completely violated; black bears have been surviving well
for millennia and some idiot researchers are concerned about the nutrition
of the new cub??

I find this arrogant and disrespectful. If the researchers were curious as
to how lactation works during pregnancy and had questions about tandem
nursing, that would be better.

The major threat to black bear nutrition is humans' destruction of habitat
and pollution of environment.

What do they propose to do if they, in their infinite wisdom, decided the
new baby is malnourished? Force weaning? Take the cub away? Feed the new cub
"Bearilac?"

I am reminded of the captive elephant mamma who was never left alone in
labor, being surrounded with humans who tried to manage her labor; both she
and her baby died.

warmly,
