I am not aware of any research regarding this contraceptive and
breastfeeding...though I haven't search that hard. Anectdotally, I
have known of one mother who received this and had a dramatic reduction
in supply. I do not find this surprising as this contains both
estrogen and progesterone...unlike Depo-provera which is progesterone
only and extensively studied in breastfeeding. I would suspect that
this form of contraception is worse than estrogen containing oral
contraceptive pills during lactation for milk supply. One definate
disadvantage is that you can't take it away if you notice a reduction
in supply...Where I work I am discouraging the use of this product in
breastfeeding mothers. But, no data...theoretical risk. The "good
news" is that since this product does contain estrogen I doubt we will
see it given immediately post-partum prior to hosptial discharge (as is
done with the progesterone only shot on occasion). Estrogens should
not be given in the first 2+ weeks after delivery (breastfeeding or
not) due to the potential increased risk of blood clots. Hope this
helps!
