Hi, all.

I would just like to comment that I agree with Jay Gordon that an infant who
has TTN (transient tachypnea of the newborn) can (& should) breastfeed. The
range of "normal" respirations for a newborn is 40 - 60/minute. Usually,
respirations under 70/min are considered okay, especially if the baby is not
exhibiting any other problems. As with other situations, we have to look at
the whole picture.

We have had babies in NICU with respirations in the 80's breastfeed without
problems. Because what are the alternatives? Gavage feed? Doesn't teach baby
to suck. Elemental nutrition through the IV? Doesn't prime the gut and
should only be used very short term. Formula feed??????????????? Don't go
there with me!!

And as for the chance of aspiration, yes, I'm sure there is one, especially
as the respiratory rate increases. Which would cause a problem if aspirated?
Breastmilk, the fluid that's supposed to be in the body? Or that other
stuff? Enough said. Right, Jack?
