I've been following this thread for a bit. I was wondering if it is also a
matter of digestion is a weird sensation for newborns. The way many
newborns deal with this is to cry and fuss so that mom and/or dad will pick
them up and help them deal with the newborn's discomfort.

I remember being at my parent's house for a few weeks after my 2nd child was
born (dh was moving us). She seemed to cry for about 3-4 hours in the
evening - nothing I could do seemed to soothe her. I just held her and
walked and rocked till she would take my breast and then both of us would
fall asleep. I felt that even if I couldn't help her stop crying that at
least she was being held by someone who loved her. Magically between 4- 6
weeks this stopped, she settled, and was the "perfect" baby.

Very different than her older brother that never believed in sleeping more
than one 4 hour stretch in 24 hrs, and all his naps were 1-1.5 hrs.

Just thinking out loud ;->
