I'm one of those lipase people, but my experience of separation isn't
typical and I never had to freeze or use frozen milk for my own babies.

My first two children would not take EBM no matter what I did so I had
to get creative with scheduling and being close to the babies and in
the end, it was all better anyway because I made it work and was
actually with my babies more than I would otherwise have been, meeting
their needs for my presence as well as for my milk.

My third baby did take about 4 bottles a week. The difference with
her was that she only got milk that had been pumped less than 24 hours
prior and I soaked the bottle nipple in my milk before her first
attempt, which was the day I went back to work (she was my 3rd baby
and I wasn't going to waste my time and energy "practicing" bottles
when I was there with her AND I knew we were going to figure things
out whether she took a bottle or not). She was just over 3 months old
at that time. The fact that she took that bottle during my 4-hour
morning away meant that she didn't reverse cycle, so life in general
was a lot better for me because I actually got some small amount of
rest at night.

I never did scald my milk but I also never tried to feed her anything
that was more than 36 hours old at max.

I did donate some of my milk to local babies (informal milk-sharing
situations) and all three of those babies readily took my milk, even
when it had been pumped several days prior to feeding or frozen. My
theory is that these babies, who were being fed what their mothers
could make and supplemented with human milk from a few other women,
were accustomed to a wider variety of flavors than my own children,
who could easily recognize when my milk was varied at all from what
they got out of "the tap." Also, those babies were being fed my milk
in an SNS or Lact-Aid (2 of the 3) and were also getting/tasting their
own mother's milk in the same mouthful.

Just some late-night musings,
Diana in NY
